Some of the Delusions We Live With

In the early 80s I thought I'd take my grandson Chuck hunting.

I thought it would be a good time for bonding and personal talks.

We loaded up my plane with a tent, raft and groceries and flew out to an unnamed lake in the shadow of Mount Mckinley and set up camp.

After supper it looked like it might rain so we took off our rubber boots and started to crawl inside the tent.

I explained to Chuck that we should lay our boots on there side in case it rained they wouldn't get wet inside.

After we were in our sleeping bags I thought it was a good time to talk about things like where he came from and how he got here.

I said Chuck, do you know how you got here? Would you like to know how people come to be? What love is about? Where I came from?

He looked at me and said, Grandpa is this another one of your jokes?

The next morning we got up and Chuck went outside to build a campfire.

I got up and pulled on one of my boots. Suddenly I realized something alive was inside my boot. I jumped around with great vigor trying to get the boot off quickly.

Chuck was laughing and yelling what was wrong?

A mouse had crawled in side my boot some time doing the night.

Chuck is a father now… We still laugh and talk about that very memorable trip ...
